After a nervous Sunday
listening to England win the 4th test in the ashes series and oh I
nearly forgot watching Colin Stemp break some tiles on the nearby
cottage as Ebernoe narrowly lost their friendly !!!, it was our turn to
tread the Ebernoe turf with a 9-8 lead in our series. It was a hot Sunny
Bank Holiday Monday as Ebernoe( or should I say Ebernoe + 3 pilgrims)
took to the field with Pilgrims batting first. The first ball was
dispatched for 4 and so should have the second if Paul Harding (
pilgrims) had not dropped Birty in the gully. This brought a comment
from Matt Scaife to Rendy (pilgrim's skipper) about what a catch that
would have been and Rendy's reply was" Yes if he had caught that
******* ball I would have ******** well killed him which unbeknown
to him was heard by all the supporters and promptly cost him a fine.
Anyway back to the match and it was the turn of E Prince to bowl his
first over . The first ball was dropped short and hooked by Birty but
unluckily for him down the throat of a certain Richard Stemp at fine leg
and Pilgrims were 9-1. Matty( 11) was next to go bowled by his namesake
Matt Scaife with the score on 36-2, quickly followed by Lawrence (20)
who became another victim of Mr.Scaife. At 45-3 it was looking a bit
shaky as Clive Johns was joined at the crease by tour newcomer Shaun
Urquhart. A good partnership was needed and that was what Pilgrims got
as Clive and Shaun put on 136 for the 4th wicket before Clive ( 72 ) was
brilliantly caught one handed by Richard Stemp. Shaun and Paul Harding
then got a quick fire 59, 5th wicket partnership to end the innings on
240-4.
After a fab tea and a rest it was Ebernoe's turn to chase our
score. Ebernoe set off well with an opening stand of 38 between M.West
and B.Rose before Clive Johns brilliantly caught M.Rose for 18 in the
slips. B.Rose was out with the score on 55 and next to go was Richard
Stemp for 17 after being dropped by our skipper (sorry Rendy) on his
first ball. Matt Scaife was batting so well he was given a fly past by
his family in their balloon only to be bowled by Jamie Gawler the next
ball and the score on 109-4.Ebernoe were still in with a good chance as
S.Crouch cruised along to 35 before being caught by Jocky and Colin
Stemp could not repeat his tile breaking innings we saw the day before
and was out for just 4. Ebernoe would not give up but despite double
figure's from E Prince16, Dave Whittington ( hopefully spelt right) 29,
A Read 21 and A Clark 13 no Ebernoe fell just 10 runs short at 230 all
out, another closely fought fight till the end and The Pilgrims taking a
2 match lead in the series. Thanks to the two Dave's for umpiring and to
the ladies for a super tea. We look forward to next year.
